C.W. "Bump" Elliott, newly hired Athletic Director in the 1970-71 academic year, created the National "I" Lettermen's Club- a post-graduate Iowa athletic alumni club.
A letterman had to earn a major letter in the varsity athletic program during their athletic career at the University of Iowa, no longer eligible for intercollegiate competition and have paid their annual dues.
A constitution and by-laws were written and approved which provided the guidelines and policies for the club.
The National "I" Lettermen's Club officially changed their name to the National Iowa Varsity Club, effective January 1, 1997 with the approval of both men's and women's Director of Athletics,
Robert Bowlsby and Dr. Christine Grant, respectively. This was done with the understanding for the inclusion of Iowa varsity women athletes present and future alumnae beginning in the calendar year of 1998.
The official date for women's "varsity" athletic program at the University of Iowa began in the 1973-74 academic school year.
